Curriculum Vitae

Georgia Delli is a Byzantine archaeologist specializing in the medieval Aegean, with research interests in landscape, fortifications, military organization, Byzantine themes, connectivity, and the spatial dynamics of Byzantine territories.

She studied History, Archaeology and Cultural Resources Management at the University of the Peloponnese (2015) before completing an M.A. (2018) and a Ph.D. (2026) in Byzantine Archaeology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Her doctoral research focused on Samos in the Middle and Late Byzantine period, combining archaeological, historical, topographical, GIS-based and archaeometric approaches. Her research has developed through extensive archaeological fieldwork in the Aegean, including Samos, Samothrace, Ikaria and Fournoi, as well as through participation in the West Area of Samos Archaeological Project (WASAP), where she is serving as Byzantine Specialist and contributed to field research, spatial documentation and the current publication of archaeological data. From 2022 to 2024, she worked as an archaeologist at the Ephorate of Antiquities of Samos and Ikaria, participating in archaeological investigations and excavations, including work on a Late Roman/Early Christian cemetery.

Her research focuses on Byzantine landscapes, fortifications, historical geography, territorial organization and connectivity, with an emphasis on the application of GIS and spatial analysis to archaeological and historical questions. Her work has been supported by the Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Studies through a Dissertation Grant (2022–2023) and a Project Grant (2026), for which she is Principal Investigator of “Reconstructing the Defensive Landscape of Samothrace (7th–15th c.): An Integrated Archaeological and Spatial Analysis.” She has also received support through the ARISTEAS scholarship for research on the technological characteristics of mortars from Byzantine monuments on Samos. Her publications address Byzantine landscapes and historical geography, fortifications, material culture, archaeometric research and digital approaches to archaeology. She has presented her research at national and international conferences and has organized the 2026 EAA session “Fortifications and Frontier Networks in the Medieval Aegean.”

Her methodological training includes competitive participation in the 2026 summer school “Beyond the Battlefield. Consequences of Premodern Warfare for Society, Culture and Landscape” (“Byzantium and the Euro-Mediterranean Cultures of War”, JGU Mainz and the Centre for Medieval Arts & Rituals (CeMAR), University of Cyprus) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the 2026 Byzantine Sigillography summer school in Athens “Unsealing Byzantium” (Byz-GOVAG), further expanding her research into military, administrative and sigillographic aspects of the Byzantine world. She is a member of the European Association of Archaeologists and of the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies.

As a Postdoctoral Researcher in Byz-GOVAG, Georgia Delli studies Byzantine provincial administration and officials through sigillographic and documentary evidence, contributing to the project’s research, database, and dissemination through conference participations and publications.

Her research interests include Byzantine provincial administration and military organization; themes and territorial organization; Aegean historical geography; landscapes, fortifications, and connectivity.
